Over the past twenty-five years, the promise of the open internet was quietly surrendered to a handful of advertising platforms.

To earn a living on these platforms, creators were forced into an algorithmic race to the bottom:

• YouTube requires hundreds of thousands of views before monetization pays rent. To survive, every video adopts the exact same exaggerated open-mouthed thumbnail, the exact same frantic editing, and the exact same formulaic clickbait.
• X (Twitter) monetizes engagement impressions. It doesn't reward the historian who spent eight months in university archives verifying a document; it rewards the anonymous account posting sensational rage-bait memes designed to accumulate quote-tweets.
• Google Search, once the world’s card catalog, has deteriorated into an SEO wasteland of sponsored results, affiliate listicles, and automated AI content farms optimized for ad-clicks rather than truth.

When algorithmic platforms only pay creators who capture millions of median impressions, content converges toward the median. Nuance is penalized. Subtlety is invisible. Deep domain expertise is economically unviable.

Now, the stakes have multiplied by orders of magnitude.

Frontier artificial intelligence models—developed by trillion-dollar tech conglomerates—have crawled every blog post, every university syllabus, every code repository, and every personal family archive on the public internet. They ingested thirty years of human life work for $0.

They took that human canon, homogenized it into dense vector embeddings, and are now selling access back to us through proprietary web interfaces at $20 per month.

If nothing changes, the future of artificial intelligence is unmistakably dystopian:
